Dr Steven Liew MB BS (SYD), FRACS

Specialist Plastic Surgeon

Shape Clinic’s founder and medical director - Dr Steven Liew (FRACS) - is one of Australia’s leading plastic surgeons and a global leader in cosmetic facial enhancement techniques.

The first Australian to be admitted as a fellow in plastic surgery at the world renowned Memorial Sloan-Kettering Medical Centre in New York, Dr Liew made his mark early in his career, specialising in facial and breast aesthetic plastic surgery.

Dr Liew has continued to specialise in face and breast surgery. But such is his passion for delivering more beautiful and natural looking results for patients he has also developed a series of world first non surgical procedures which have earned him an international reputation.

A new generation plastic surgeon

Dr Liew’s pioneering techniques to re-shape and dramatically transform facial shapes and features have revolutionised the cosmetic industry.

Dr Liew says his work in this area reflects his long held belief that cosmetic medicine needed to move beyond simply trying to smooth wrinkles and make patients look younger and focus more on the finer aesthetics, producing results that rejuvenate the face but also glamourise and beautify the overall facial shape.

As a new generation plastic surgeon, he believes these more advanced non surgical techniques can be used to enhance surgical procedures and also offer a very effective alternative to patients where surgery is not the best option.

While trialling his world first non surgical eye “lift” for ageing, hollow eyes, for example, Dr Liew found the procedure did in fact produce long lasting and better results than surgery while also transforming a patients appearance.

World first facial cosmetic procedures

Dr Liew’s non surgical procedure to re-shape and transform the misshapen or square shaped lower face and jawline to a more beautiful, feminine shape (Media "Angle of Beauty" Elle, New York 2009 Dermatalogical Times, USA 2009 ) was the first in his series of breakthrough procedures.

He then went on to develop procedures to perform eye, neck and face lifts as well as lower jaw reshaping and gummy smile correction - all without surgery.

Dr Liew says judicious use of the new non surgical techniques now enable skilled cosmetic surgeons to effectively “photoshop” and transform the faces of patients at any age.

They can delay the need for surgery for years – even decades - while also making patients more attractive in the process. Further they can also be used very effectively in combination with surgery to deliver more natural looking results.

Dr Liew’s global lecture series, showcasing his innovative approach - “Botox: Thinking Beyond the Wrinkles” – have placed him in high demand on the international lecture circuit. They have also been widely reported in medical journals and broadcast and print media (Media) and won him numerous awards, including:

  • The best maiden scientific presentation awarded by The Australian Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2008
  • The most innovative scientific presentation in IMCAS (International Master Class of Anti Ageing and Surgery), Paris 2008
  • The best published article in peer reviewed scientific journal awarded by The Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons in 2010

Dr Liew is also a regularly called upon by media for his for expert opinion on cosmetic industry trends. (Media, Face Advanced Non Surgical)

The Liew LIFT: A Global Beauty Template

To aid both plastic surgeons and cosmetic physicians on how to achieve the best results for patients, Dr Liew has also developed the Liew International Face Template (Media, "Concepts of Beauty", Dermatology Times USA 2009).

A global beauty template, the Liew LIFT is fast being adopted as a universal standard and measuring tool for modern facial enhancement procedures – surgical and non surgical - around the world.

Dr Liew based the Liew LIFT on the facial shapes of model’s and actresses considered universally beautiful. He observed that, regardless of ethnicity, the world’s most attractive women all shared a common facial shape as well as specific measurements to the angle of their jaw line.

While other beauty templates - such as the Phi mask – have been available as a guide for cosmetic surgeons, Dr Liew believed they were far too complex for surgeons to apply in daily practice. In contrast, the Liew LIFT offers a much simpler measuring tool to help physicians achieve more consistent and universally attractive results.
