Understanding Surgical Risks and Considerations
Surgery is a medical procedure that carries inherent risks and potential complications.
While advancements in surgical techniques and healthcare standards have improved safety, it remains important for individuals to make informed decisions and understand both the benefits and risks before proceeding with any surgical procedure.
Common Surgical Risks
-
Scarring – Healing from incisions may lead to visible scars, which can vary in appearance based on genetics, skin type, and location.
-
Bruising and Swelling – Common after surgery; usually resolves over time but varies between individuals.
-
Pain – Some level of discomfort is normal and managed with medication and rest.
-
Infection – Uncommon but possible; adherence to post-operative care helps reduce risk.
-
Hematoma and Seroma – Accumulations of blood or fluid may occur and sometimes require medical intervention.
-
Anaesthesia Risks – Includes rare allergic reactions or side effects; assessed during pre-operative planning.
-
Nerve Sensitivity or Damage – Temporary or, rarely, permanent changes in sensation may occur.
-
Cosmetic Dissatisfaction – Results may not meet personal expectations; clear communication with your surgeon is essential.
-
Mortality – Although rare, serious complications including death can occur; safety protocols aim to minimise this risk.
Understanding Risks of Non-Surgical Medical Aesthetic Treatments
Non-surgical medical aesthetic treatments including device-based skin tightening or resurfacing procedures are still considered medical interventions and carry potential complications.
Common Risks
-
Bruising and Swelling – Temporary swelling, redness, or bruising at the treatment site is common and typically resolves within days.
-
Pain or Tenderness – Mild discomfort or sensitivity at the treatment area can occur post-procedure.
-
Infection – Rare but possible, particularly if post-treatment care instructions are not followed.
-
Allergic or Adverse Reactions – Some patients may experience hypersensitivity to certain products or devices.
-
Asymmetry or Irregularities – Uneven results or minor irregularities may occur and sometimes require additional treatment for correction.
-
Temporary Nerve Sensations – Numbness, tingling, or minor nerve irritation may be experienced, depending on the procedure.
-
Skin or Tissue Complications – In rare cases, vascular compromise or skin injury may occur and require medical management.
-
Unsatisfactory Results – Outcomes may differ from expectations due to individual anatomical and healing variations.
Minimising Risks and Making Informed Decisions
To help reduce risk and ensure safe, effective care:
-
Choose a qualified, registered health practitioner experienced in the specific treatment or procedure.
-
Ensure all treatments are performed in an appropriate, clinical environment using approved products and technologies.
-
Discuss your medical history openly with your practitioner, including medications, allergies, or past procedures.
-
Understand the realistic outcomes, risks, and recovery process of your chosen treatment.
-
Follow all pre- and post-treatment care instructions provided by your practitioner.
-
Seek immediate follow-up care if you experience any unexpected or concerning symptoms.
Important Considerations
-
No procedure—surgical or non-surgical—can guarantee a specific result.
-
Individual healing responses, medical history, and lifestyle factors all influence outcomes.
-
Treatments should only be undertaken when you fully understand the potential risks, benefits, and alternatives.
Important Facts
Under 18s
Cosmetic procedures for people under 18 require a minimum 7‑day cooling‑off period after consent and no payments are taken before that period (except the initial consult fee). Parent/guardian views are considered, and prescription‑only medicines for cosmetic purposes are not prescribed for under‑18s.
Prescribing policy for Schedule4 Treatments
A face‑to‑face consultation with an authorised prescriber is required each time a prescription is issued. We do not offer text or email‑only prescribing
What to expect at consent
You’ll receive verbal and plain‑language written information covering: procedure steps, recovery and care, risks (including person‑specific risks), alternatives (including conservative options), costs and maintenance. For medical aesthetic treatments, your consent records the medicine type and quantity used.
Image permissions
At Shape Clinic, you will have the chance to review images before agreeing to their use in advertising. Consent for advertising images is separate from procedure consent. Images are stored on secure clinic systems (not personal devices). You may withdraw consent later and we will stop using your images where possible; you’ll receive a copy of your signed consent.
No incentives or finance schemes
At Shape Clinic, we do not provide free or discounted procedures for promotion (including to influencers), and we do not promote third‑party loan or payment schemes as part of a procedure. We also do not offer add‑on products/services that could act as incentives to seek a cosmetic procedure.
