Lip Lift Surgery Sydney

What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that involves the excision of skin from the upper lip area, typically at the base of the nose, to reduce the vertical height of the upper lip (philtrum). This procedure may be considered in individuals with age-related elongation of the upper lip or reduced visibility of the vermilion border.

With ageing, changes in soft tissue volume and skin elasticity can result in elongation of the philtrum and decreased vermilion show. Lip lift surgery aims to reposition the upper lip to enhance proportion and balance in the perioral region.

What to expect from Lip Lift Surgery

A lip lift is a surgical procedure that involves the excision of a segment of skin at the base of the columella to reduce the vertical height of the upper lip (philtrum). This is typically performed under local anaesthesia.

Dr Steven Liew (FRACS MED0001151298) utilises a deep-plane technique, which involves layered closure of the soft tissue structures beneath the skin to minimise surface tension. This approach is intended to support wound healing and reduce the risk of hypertrophic scarring; however, individual healing responses can vary.

Estimated procedure time: 1–2 hours
Estimated recovery period: 7–10 days (may vary depending on individual factors and procedural complexity)

Postoperative Recovery and Care

Following lip lift surgery, patients can expect a temporary recovery period with common postoperative effects.

Expected Postoperative Effects:

  • Swelling and ecchymosis (bruising): Typically peaks within the first 72 hours.

  • Perioral tightness: A sensation of tightness or restricted movement during the early healing phase is expected.

  • Altered sensation: Temporary numbness or tingling around the incision site may occur and usually resolves over time.

  • Minor bleeding: Oozing from the incision sites can occur and should be managed according to the post-operative care plan provided by your surgeon.

General Postoperative Instructions:

  • Cold compresses: Intermittent use of cold compresses (15 minutes on, 15 minutes off) during the first 48 hours may assist in reducing swelling.

  • Head elevation: Elevating the head while resting or sleeping can help minimise oedema.

  • Activity: Avoid strenuous activity and heavy lifting during the initial recovery period. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation.

Post Lip Lift Recovery & Care

Following lip lift surgery, proper recovery and care are crucial for optimal healing and achieving the best results. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect and important tips for your post-operative journey:

What to Expect?

Swelling and bruising: These are common and most prominent in the first 24-48 hours, peaking around day 3-4. You may experience tightness and difficulty speaking.
Numbness and tingling: This is normal due to temporary nerve manipulation during the procedure. It gradually resolves within weeks.
Bleeding: Some minor bleeding from the incisions is expected. Apply gentle pressure with gauze as directed by your surgeon.

Post-Operative Care

Ice packs: Use ice packs wrapped in a thin towel to reduce swelling and discomfort. Apply for 15 minutes at a time, with 15-minute intervals in between.
Elevation: Sleep with your head elevated on extra pillows to minimize swelling.
Movement: Avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting. Light walking is encouraged to promote circulation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are there risks associated with lip lift surgery?

All surgical procedures carry inherent risks. Potential complications associated with lip lift surgery may include infection, bleeding, delayed wound healing, scarring, asymmetry, sensory changes, and dissatisfaction with aesthetic outcome. These risks will be discussed in detail during a consultation with your Specialist Plastic Surgeon to assist in informed decision-making.

Is lip lift surgery associated with pain?

Lip lift procedures are typically performed under local anaesthesia, which minimises intraoperative discomfort. Patients may experience temporary sensations such as pressure or tightness during the procedure. Postoperative discomfort, described by some as a mild burning or sore sensation, is usually transient and may be managed with analgesia as directed by your surgeon.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to a lip lift?

Non-surgical medical aesthetic approaches may offer temporary enhancement of lip contour and position. These options may be appropriate for select individuals and will be discussed during a consultation, based on individual anatomy and treatment goals.
