Otoplasty Sydney

About Otoplasty

Otoplasty, also known as ear correction surgery, is commonly performed to address prominent ears by repositioning them closer to the head. It can also be used to reduce the size of large ears.

This surgical procedure aims to improve the appearance of ears that protrude or have other structural deformities. Results vary between individuals and depend on the specific correction performed.

Results

Otoplasty, also known as pinnaplasty, is a surgical procedure aimed at correcting prominent or protruding ears, as well as other ear deformities or defects. This surgery can be performed at any age but is generally recommended once the ear cartilage has fully developed, typically between 5 and 10 years of age.

The procedure’s goal is to achieve a balanced and natural ear position, ensuring the ears neither protrude excessively nor appear overly pinned back. Individual results may vary depending on the specific anatomy and surgical approach.

What to expect from Otoplasty

During your consultation, your surgeon will assess the shape, size, and position of your ears and discuss your goals and expectations. Otoplasty is typically performed under local or general anaesthesia, depending on your age and procedure complexity.

The surgery involves reshaping or repositioning the ear cartilage to achieve a more balanced appearance. Incisions are usually made behind the ear to minimise visible scarring.

Procedure duration: Approximately 1-2 hours
Recovery time: Typically 1-2 weeks of initial recovery, with swelling and bruising gradually resolving over several weeks.

Post-operatively, you may experience swelling, bruising, mild discomfort, and some numbness around the ear area. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to care for the surgical site and activity restrictions.

Follow-up appointments will be scheduled to monitor your healing progress and address any concerns.

Individual results and recovery times may vary.

Who is a candidate for Otoplasty surgery?

Otoplasty may be suitable for individuals who have concerns with the shape, size, or position of their ears, including prominent or protruding ears, asymmetry, or other congenital or acquired ear deformities.

The procedure is commonly performed on children once the ear cartilage has sufficiently developed, usually around 5 to 10 years of age, but can also be suitable for adolescents and adults.

Candidates should be in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the surgical outcomes, and be seeking correction to improve the appearance of their ears. A thorough consultation with a Specialist Plastic Surgeon is essential to determine individual suitability for the procedure.
