Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation) Sydney

About the treatment

Women choose to undergo Augmentation Mammoplasty (breast augmentation) for a variety of reasons. Some wish to alter the size or shape of their breasts, while others seek to correct asymmetry or restore diminished volume due to weight loss or pregnancy.

Breast implants used for augmentation procedures come in a broad range of sizes, shapes and materials to tailor the results to your body type and desired outcomes. Using different incision techniques will reduce visible scarring.

A WORD FROM SPECIALIST PLASTIC SURGEON, DR. STEVEN LIEW

One of the most common augmentation mammoplasty subjects women want to discuss is size. While this is, of course, a significant part of the procedure, it is of secondary importance to me as a specialist plastic surgeon.

Augmentation mammoplasty (breast augmentation surgery) achieves much more than increasing breast size. Expert augmentation mammoplasty (breast implant surgery) considers the shape of the chest and the entire body profile.

What is Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation)?

Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that involves placing implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles to increase breast size. It is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries in the world.

Results

Augmentation Mammoplasty (breast augmentation) is a highly individualised procedure. You may be a candidate for augmentation mammoplasty if you are generally healthy and your breasts have fully developed:

  • Create the right size or shape for the body profile.
  • Raise the area so that the breasts sit in a better position on the chest
  • Correct asymmetry or restore diminished volume due to weight loss or pregnancy

Choosing the right shape, texture and placement of your implants

In addition to breast implant type (saline, silicone), there are a variety of shapes and textures to choose from. Different breast implants have different surfaces—some smooth, and others are slightly rough or textured.

Round implants: Popular with women who want substantial lift and fullness, particularly in the upper pole of the breast.

Teardrop shape implants: For women seeking a more conservative, natural profile. However, women with sufficient breast tissue can achieve a natural look with round implants.

Your best approach is to consult Dr Steven Liew to determine which implant shape will produce your desired outcome.

Placement of implants

There are two main ways in which breast implants are inserted:

  1. under the breast tissue (subglandular)
  2. under the pectoral muscle (submuscular)

Placement is based on the amount of natural breast tissue you have and the size of the implant you desire.

Asian Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation) Sydney

Asian women who seek breast augmentation require a specific approach—due to differences in physical structure and the quality of their skin.

Asian women are frequently shorter in stature with a long and narrow chest than the rest of the body. In addition, they often have minimal soft tissue with occasional ribs visible through the skin. The overlying skin and tissue tend to be tighter and firmer than Caucasians.

Also, Asians tend to have a higher tendency to produce darker and thicker scarring (hyperpigmentation, hypertrophic scars). This is why extra care is required in the post-surgery period to promote optimal scar appearance.

Post Pregnancy Augmentation Mammoplasty (Breast Augmentation)

After pregnancy, expansion and deflation of the breast tissue cause stretching of the breast skin and loss of breast volume; post-pregnancy breasts are often smaller, looser, and may sag. Many patients complain of a of fullness, especially in the upper part of the breasts.

It is advisable to wait at least 6 months after completing breastfeeding before considering augmentation mammoplasty (breast implant)s. For both the recovery process and results, it’s recommended to wait until your hormones, weight, and energy levels have returned to normal—and you have settled into your new routine.

  • Capsular contracture, which is a hardening of the scar tissue that forms around the implant
