Inverted Nipple Correction Sydney

Inverted nipples are a common condition and can cause both functional and cosmetic concerns to the patient.

The breasts are an intrinsic part of our appearance. The aesthetic form of the area can significantly affect our comfort, self-esteem and how we embrace our body. Beyond the size and shape of the breasts themselves, the look of our nipples can also be a source of concern. While a commonly seen condition in both men and women, inverted nipples, which indent more than they protrude, can result in feelings such as emotional distress, embarrassment and even intimacy issues. Inverted nipple correction serves to rectify this condition, helping to mend and refine the shape of the nipples and ultimately restore your confidence.

Inverted nipple surgery can help to repair nipples that are inverted, shy, extended or enlarged, for a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing chest area. While this condition may not necessarily pose medical concerns, it can significantly impact your emotional wellbeing. Expert surgeon Dr Liew and his dedicated team at Shape Clinic strive to restore your self- esteem by refining the chest area for a balanced and more attractive profile, while working to maintain sensation and functionality in the area.

What are Inverted Nipples?

Inverted nipples are an irregular variation in shape where the nipples point inwards instead of projecting outwards. The condition can affect one or both nipples and may either be present at birth (congenital inversion) or develop over time (acquired inversion). Nipple inversion may be acquired by inflammation of the breast tissue, which causes the base of the nipple to be squeezed, limiting stretch and movement in the area. For women, the condition may arise during breastfeeding as a result of the milk ducts becoming blocked or clogged. Inverted nipples may also be caused by an abscess under the areola or an infection within the breast tissue.

While inverted nipples are not typically considered a health hazard, the condition can diminish a patient’s self-confidence, impact their intimate relationships, and in some cases, reduce their quality of life. Fortunately, the issue can be corrected through surgical treatment, allowing the nipples to project outwards and naturally complement the breast shape.

What is Nipple Inversion Correction?

Nipple inversion correction, also referred to as nipple enhancement or inversion repair, is a surgical procedure designed to improve the appearance of the breasts by increasing the projection of the nipples. This surgery aims to correct nipples that appear flat or point inwards to achieve a natural, more symmetrical look. This treatment serves to redefine the nipples to fit in harmony with the breasts and complement the overall profile of the chest. Nipple inversion correction has been sought by many patients who wish to resolve self-image and intimacy issues, and ultimately enhance their self-confidence and emotional comfort.

The Procedure

The procedure may vary slightly for each patient and will draw on an individualised treatment plan created by Dr Liew, based on your personal condition, concerns and expectations. In a consultation before your procedure, Dr Liew will take the time to consider your concerns and respond to any queries you may have. Shape Clinic understands the personal nature of this issue and strives to make you feel comfortable through all parts of the process, from consultation to aftercare.

Generally, this procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic as an office-based surgery. Treatment takes approximately 30 minutes, requires a minimal downtime period of one day, and generally achieves long-lasting results. The details of the procedure, such as the incision and techniques employed, will depend primarily on the degree of inversion. The surgery usually involves incisions either at the base of the nipple, across the nipple, or around the areola to release the scar tissue that prevents the nipple from projecting. In your consultation, Dr Liew will examine the area to determine the most suitable approach.

Who is a Suitable Candidate?

Inverted nipples can affect both men and women. However, women are more likely to seek treatment because the nipples can often invert while breastfeeding, which can potentially complicate the process for some women. For others, inverted nipples are an issue of cosmetic embarrassment and distress and can cause serious self-image issues.

Candidates for nipple surgery are usually determined by the severity of their condition. Physicians often draw on a three-point scale to discern whether surgical treatment is necessary and will resolve the issue.

Grade 1: As the least severe type of inversion, patients with this stage are often referred to as having “shy” nipples. At this level, nipples are usually in the inverted position but will protrude outwards under stimulation or when exposed to cold temperatures.

Grade 2: At this moderate level of inversion, the nipples remain inverted almost always. Generally, at this stage, the nipples can be forced to protrude outward under stimulation or suction, however, this is usually a temporary result. Some patients at this level consider a correction.

Grade 3: Considered the most severe level of inversion, nipples at this stage are highly constricted from the surrounding breast tissue, which prevents the nipple from projecting even with strong suction or stimulation. In this case, surgical treatment may be strongly recommended for correction.
