What is HIFU?

High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) is a non-surgical treatment performed at Shape Clinic in Sydney that uses focused ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin.

HIFU works with your body's natural healing process. The focused ultrasound beams converge at precise depths beneath the skin's surface, creating small zones of controlled thermal energy. This encourages the skin to rebuild collagen and elastin over time, gradually improving firmness, tone and texture.

How Does HIFU Work?

Collagen naturally declines with age. Production begins to slow from our mid-20’s and as collagen and elastin reduce, skin gradually loses firmness and structural support.

HIFU may address this by delivering targeted ultrasound energy to specific depths in the skin and underlying tissue, reaching temperatures sufficient enough to trigger a healing and collagen-building response, without damaging the surface of the skin. Because the treatment can be customised to different depths, your practitioner can tailor it to your individual facial structure and the level of laxity being addressed.

Disclaimer

Results build gradually over the following weeks to months as new collagen potentially forms. HIFU does not provide instant results, but rather, progressive improvement.

Who Is HIFU Suitable For?

HIFU may be suited to people with mild to moderate skin laxity who are looking to firm and tone the skin. Suitability depends on factors such as your skin thickness, the amount of underlying facial fat, and your treatment goals - this is something your practitioner will discuss with you during a consultation.

What To Expect During Treatment

  • A cleanse of the treatment area, followed by application of ultrasound gel.
  • The handpiece is applied to the skin, delivering ultrasound energy at pre-mapped depths.
  • Most people feel brief warmth, tingling or prickling sensations as the energy is delivered
  • Minimal downtime. Some redness or mild swelling can occur temporarily

Disclaimer

HIFU is not a replacement for surgery. It cannot remove significant excess skin or correct advanced laxity and it is best considered a preventative, or subtly corrective treatment.

Important Considerations for HIFU

  • Individual results vary and cannot be guaranteed
  • Some people may require more than one session depending on their goals and the assessment of your practitioner
  • As with any treatment, there are risks and possible side effects, which your practitioner will discuss with you during your consultation
  • HIFU is not suitable for everyone. A full assessment of your suitability, medical history and expectations is required before any treatment is booked

HIFU Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

Most people describe the sensation as warmth or brief prickling as the energy is delivered. Discomfort levels vary between individuals and treatment areas.

Because HIFU works by stimulating your own collagen production, results build gradually over several weeks to months. As ageing is an ongoing process, maintenance treatments may be recommended over time.

Most people return to normal activities immediately. Some mild redness, swelling or tenderness can occur and usually settles within a few hours to a couple of days.

Most people have one initial HIFU treatment, although the number of treatments recommended varies from person to person. Your practitioner will assess factors such as your skin quality, treatment goals, and the area being treated before discussing whether additional treatments may be appropriate. Some people may choose to have maintenance treatments over time, depending on their individual circumstances and treatment plan. Your practitioner can advise you on what may be suitable for you during your consultation.
